The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Kashmir, located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Range overlooking Dal Lake in Srinagar, is the largest tulip garden in Asia. It was established in 2007 to boost floriculture and tourism in the Kashmir Valley.
History & Development
Initially known as Siraj Bagh, the garden was conceptualized by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, to enhance tourism.
It was developed by the Department of Floriculture on 30 hectares of terraced land, making it the largest tulip garden in Asia.
The first Tulip Festival was organized in 2008 to attract visitors and showcase the diverse tulip varieties.
Tulip Garden Today
The garden now houses 1.5 million tulips in 60+ varieties and different colors.
Other flowers like daffodils, hyacinths, and ranunculus are also cultivated.
It has become one of Srinagar’s top springtime attractions, drawing thousands of tourists every year.
The Tulip Garden usually opens in late March to early April, depending on the bloom, and the Tulip Festival is held during this period to celebrate the stunning floral display.
